My Story
Dr. Gina Petonito
I founded Academic Womxn Reclaim Your Power at the height of the COVID pandemic.
I lost my contingent job along with 150 other faculty ostensibly due to trim the COVID induced cash strapped budget.
One year from retirement, I attempted to secure a visiting position to no avail. The passed my 28 years of experience up for someone who had just graduated that year.
And who in academia is surprised?
As I recovered from that blow, I looked around me and saw non-tenured, and yes, tenured womxn forced out of their positions. Summarily dismissed and six months later offered their positions back at adjunct rates.
Something HAD to be done to stem the ways that highly educated, skilled and talented womxn are devalued. At this point I had studied under various business and mindset coaches. And I also enrolled in a coaching program.
Business and coaching training were not my only credentials. For my entire academic career I focused on supporting and ulifting women. I even won a covered award for doing just that, the Midwest Sociological Society’s Jane Addams Award for a career of service to women.
So on March 1, 2021, Academic Womxn Reclaim Your Power was born.

One-On-One Coaching
Our one-on-one coaching sessions are tailored to your specific needs and goals. Starting with working to identify your limiting beliefs, developing strategies to overcome them, and create a mindset that empowers you to achieve your full potential.
One-On-One Coaching
I hung out my shingle, invited people to my facebook group, and started my one-on-one coaching business. I aimed to help academic womxn dealing with job precarity to develop a side business so that they could choose to leave or stay in academia on their terms.
I was able to secure several clients who went on to achieve great success. But then I faced one of the biggest challenges of my life.
Cancer.
I spent the better part of 2022 in various cancer treatments. Ethically I chose not to take on additional one-on-one clients, and but I moved forward with other aspects of the business: resume development, editing, and writing for academics and others.
As always, I offered free content that anyone can access on youtube. I spotlighted former clients and colleagues in entrepreneur month. And I started the year of with a bang with my Summit, Reclaiming Our Power: Academic Womxn Rise Together. I invited academic womxn entrepreneurs and others to discuss three topics: work/life balance; alt-ac/non-ac job searches and my favorite, entrepreneurship for entrepreneurs!
I am still open to coaching a client one-on-one, but consider my new group coaching program first.
